USD's Tony Turgeon Captures Iowa State Men's Invitational Title; Maloney Finishes 10th for USD Women

South Dakota's Tony Turgeon of Sioux Falls, S.D., captured the men's individual title at the Iowa State Invitational on Friday, Sept. 9. It was Turgeon's second straight individual title in two races to open the season.

AMES, IOWA -- Senior Tony Turgeon of the South Dakota Men's Cross Country Team continued his strong start to the 2005 season by capturing the men's individual title at the Iowa State Invitational on Friday in Ames, Iowa. Turgeon and USD's Tyler Wetering finished in the top-five as the USD men's team placed four runners in the top 21 runners.
Turgeon, a Division II All-American and the reigning NCC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, won the men's competition by covering the 8K course in 25:42.64. Turgeon of Sioux Falls, S.D., finished ahead of Iowa State's Kiel Uhl, who was second in 25:44.12.
Junior Tyler Wetering of Sioux Falls, S.D., also had a stellar performance with a fifth-place finish in 26:17.71. Also for the men's team, Redshirt freshman Matt Yaggie (Mission Hill, S.D.) was 19th in 27:25.18; while senior Nate Seier (Dubuque, Iowa) finished 21st in 27:34.02; and Matt Dewald (Yankton, S.D.) was 38th in 28:38.98.
Freshman Kelsey Maloney (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was the top finisher for the USD women's team, which placed five runners among the top 25. Maloney finished 10th in 20:17.25. Kaylee Keating (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was 13th in 20:39.29. Other USD finishers included freshman Lexi Dunlop (Woodbine, Iowa), 22nd, 21:20.67; freshman Ali Duba (Sioux Falls, S.D.) 23rd, 21:25.89; junior Amy Steckelberg (Yankton, S.D.), 25th, 21:48.64; junior Amanda Roeman (Dell Rapids, S.D.) 26th, 21:52.06; and freshman Jessica Lundgren (Truman, Minn.), 30th, 22:47.54.
The South Dakota Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams will compete in the University of Minnesota Invitational on Sept. 24 in Minneapolis.
