USD Men and Women Cross Country Teams Open Season with Strong Performances at the Don Baker Invite

    Aimee Nielsen of Mason City, Iowa, won the college women's cross country race and set a meet record in the process at the Don Baker Invite held at USD today. Tony Turgeon of Sioux Falls, S.D., won the men's individual competition. The USD men's team took the top five places in the competition.

    VERMILLION, S.D. -- The South Dakota Men's and Women's cross country teams had several outstanding performances to open the season at the Don Baker Invitational held at USD's Don Baker Cross Country Course today.

    South Dakota student-athletes Aimee Nielsen (Mason City, Iowa) and Tony Turgeon (Sioux Falls, S.D.) captured the women’s and men’s individual titles, respectively. The meet included high school competition as well as the men’s and women’s race for university squads.

    Nielsen won the college women's race by covering the 5,000m course in 18:25.83. She crushed the meet record by over a minute. Following Nielsen was freshman standout Kelsey Maloney (Sioux Falls, S.D.), who was third in 18:48.35. Also for the South Dakota women’s team, Kaylee Keating (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished fifth in 20:07.62 with Amanda Roeman (Dell Rapids, S.D.), 10th, in 20:55.16. In addition, Amy Steckelberg (Yankton, S.D.) finished 12th in 21:16.64. The top finisher for Wayne State was Haley Reeves, who was fourth in 19:55.38.

    On the men's side, Turgeon (Sioux Falls, S.D.) covered the 8,000m course in 26:44 with Tyler Wetering (Sioux Falls, S.D.) second in 26:45. USD took the top five places in the meet. USD's Matt Dewald (Yankton, S.D.) was third in 27:05.96 and Matt Yaggie (Yankton, S.D.) finished fourth in 27:12.10. Nate Seier (Dubuque, Iowa) finished fifth in 27:18.02. Also for the Coyotes, Josh Blue (Council Bluffs, Iowa) placed 14th, 29:50.91.The top Wayne State runner was Ben Crabtree, who was sixth in 27:26.37.
