Volleyball Scores Win Over St. Cloud State, 3-2, To End NCC Drought

Team records first NCC victory since October of 1997.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The 47-game losing streak in the North Central Conference is over for the University of South Dakota volleyball team. The Coyotes, who also broke an eight-game overall losing streak, defeated St. Cloud State by the scores of 15-12, 12-15, 17-15, 7-15 and 15-7. The Coyotes improved their overall record to 7-12 and are now 1-5 in the NCC. St. Cloud State fell to 3-11 and 0-5 in the NCC.

Freshman Sarah Vollertsen led the Coyotes to victory by registering 17 kills on 33 attacks for an outstanding .485 hitting percentage. She also had five solo blocks and six block assists as the Coyotes recorded 15 team blocks. Freshman Becky Olson had 13 kills on 34 attacks for a .324 hitting percentage. Olson also had 12 defensive digs and two aces along with five block assists. Sophomore Leslie Fusinato had 12 kills on 31 attacks and a team-high 19 defensive digs. Freshman Angela Golesh led the Coyotes with 49 set assists and also chipped in with eight defensive digs. Overall, the Coyotes had 55 kills on 170 attacks. They recorded 65 defensive digs and 51 set assists along with 10 service aces.

St. Cloud State was led by Katie Larsen, who had 25 kills on 60 attacks and Melissa Wright, who had 19 kills on 57 attacks for the Huskies. SCSU recorded 56 kills on 155 attacks and had 67 defensive digs.

South Dakota will participate in the Missouri Western State Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo., on Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30.
