SIOUX CITY, Iowa –- North Dakota won five of the six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 win over The University of South Dakota women’s tennis team in action on Friday in Sioux City, Iowa.
North Dakota (10-7) also earned the team point by winning three doubles matches (in Division I scoring, the team that wins two of the three doubles matches wins one team point).
For USD (9-11), Shadi Soleymani (Fr., Vasteras, Sweden) recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win over North Dakota’s Emily Callison at No. 1 singles. The Coyotes also lost a pair of tough matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, as Rijalda Zejnic (Jr., Hamilton, Ontario) and Isabel Nunez (Fr., Oakville, Ontario) lost in three-set decisions.
Zejnic and Soleymani lost 8-4 at No. 1 doubles as well to UND’s Brynne Wischer and Emily Callison were victorious.
“The meet was competitive, particularly at the higher spots,” said USD head coach Malcolm Gilreath. “There were a lot of close matches. It was a good learning match. Shadi played a very good match – she beat a good No. 1 singles player.”
USD’s next action is scheduled for Thursday, April 16 against Briar Cliff University. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Coyotes’ meet against Sioux Falls, originally scheduled for April 6, has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.
