2000 Women's Soccer In Review

In just its second year of existence, the University of South Dakota women's soccer team continued to develop as a program and along the way enjoyed the highs of winning and the lows of losing. Regardless, it is a program that continues to show improvement.

In 2000, first-year head coach Jessica Maddox guided her troops to a 6-13 record and along the way showed enthusiasm, spirit and heart. Their dedication and will proved to be solid characteristics for a program that has gone 12-22-1 after its first two years of existence.

This past season the Coyotes defeated Rocky Mountain 7-3; Morningside 6-1; South Dakota State 4-1; Northwestern 2-1; Dordt 3-2 in OT; and Morningside 5-2. USD was involved in three overtime matches, losing two, including a 2-1 double-overtime defeat against St. Cloud State on Dakota Day.

Overall, USD had 40 goals and 28 assists for 108 points in 19 games. The Coyotes had 285 shots, shooting at a .140 percentage. The Coyotes, who averaged 15 shots per game, averaged 2.1 goals per game while permitting 23.5 shots and 3.4 goals. Opponents held a 446-285 shot advantage and held a 118-81 edge in corner kicks. USD had more penalties than opponents, 141-130. USD had five yellow cards and one red card while opponents had four yellow cards.

Individually, junior Erin Torres led USD with 32 points on 13 goals and six assists. She attempted 49 shots. Sophomore Janel Johnson had 12 goals and five assists for 29 points and recorded 57 shots. She had three game-winning goals and was 2-of-2 on penalty kicks. Freshman Ali Magel scored 10 points on four goals and two assists on 50 shots while sophomore Lindsey Sturm had 11 points on four goals and three assists. She attempted 36 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Esther Regalado had a 3.36 goals-against average in 14 games. She played 1,257 minutes, permitting a total of 47 goals and recording 136 saves for a .743 save percentage. While Regalado was in goal the Coyotes had a 4-9 record. Junior Sara Nelson had a 3.43 goals-against average, permitting 12 goals and recording 38 saves in eight games. The team was 1-3 while Nelson was in goal.

In terms of goals by period, opponents outscored the Coyotes in the first period 29-16, 33-23 in the second period and 2-1 in overtime. In shots by period, opponents had a 226-120 lead in the first period, 198-158 second period advantage and 22-7 edge in the overtime periods. USD had an advantage in saves by period, recording a 192-130 advantage. USD held a 99-51 edge in the first period and 85-75 in the second period while holding an 8-4 advantage in the overtime period.

Senior Michelle Reinke and sophomore Jaime Strong were named honorable mention all-NCC performers while Johnson and Strong were picked honorable mention academic all-NCC.
