The University of South Dakota women's soccer team fell just short in a second half rally and lost 3-2 to the College of Saint Mary (Omaha, Neb.) in nonconference action at the soccer field just north of the DakotaDome Saturday afternoon before 109 fans in attendance. It was the Coyotes' final match of the season. South Dakota concluded their 2000 season at 6-13 while Saint Mary, ranked #12 in NAIA, improved to 15-3.
The Saint Mary Flames jumped to a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 40:49 of the first period. The Flames added unassisted goals by Jill Vacek at 46:57 and Julie Greco at 63:24. The Coyotes began their second period comeback when junior Erin Torres scored her 13th goal of the season at 64:12. Then, at 88:23, South Dakota freshman Jennifer Wieland tallied an unassisted goal off a misplayed goal kick, but the Coyotes could not add the tying tally in the final minute and half of play.
Saint Mary outshot the Coyotes 31-10, including a 20-1 shot advantage in the first period. The Flames also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Coyotes got a solid performance from freshman Esther Regalado, who had missed several games due to injury. Regalado had eight saves in goal.
