The University of South Dakota women's soccer team lost a non-conference game, 4-1, to Wayne State College Wednesday afternoon at the soccer field just north of the DakotaDome. The Coyotes fell to 5-12 on the season while Wayne State improved to 16-2.
Early on, neither team had any offensive flow as the first period ended in a 0-0 tie. The second period was different as Wayne State scored early and kept the pressure on South Dakota. The Wildcats broke the scoreless tie when Sarah Herrick tallied an unassisted goal at 48:03. It was a lead the Wildcats did not relinquish. Amanda Keller of Wayne State scored 53 seconds later (48:56) off assists from Sara Zimmer and Jackie Arnold to put Wayne State up by two goals. Keller put the ball in the net when her shot went off USD goalkeeper Sara Nelson, hit the post and went into the goal. The Wildcats jumped to a 3-0 lead on the first of two goals
by Anne Paulsen (68:53). The Coyotes finally scored at 75:56 on a header by Erin Torres off an assist from Jennifer Wieland. Paulsen added her second goal (unassisted) at 88:48.
Overall, Wayne State had the edge in shots (22-11) and corner kicks (7-4). Wayne State's goalkeeper Kalle Wamsat had six saves while USD's Nelson saved nine shots.
