VERMILLION, S.D. - The young University of South Dakota soccer team (5-11, 1-7) showed a lot of heart and resiliency despite a 5-2 loss Sunday afternoon to the #12 ranked Minnesota State, Mankato Mavericks (13-2, 7-0) in North Central Conference action at the soccer field just north of the DakotaDome.

The Coyotes, who lost a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime home match to St. Cloud State on Saturday, played without the services of starting goalkeeper Esther Regalado and several other players. After falling behind 2-0, the Coyotes got an unassisted goal by Janel Johnson at the 39:52 mark. Minnesota State received first period goals from Krystal Anderson (assist Jen Pfenning) at 12:53 and an unassisted score by Amanda Burrows at 37:21.

In the second period, Minnesota State struck for a pair of unassisted goals by Rhianna Undajon (58:09, 67:10) before South Dakota again fought back when Johnson tallied her second goal of the game off an assist by Angela Houdek at 70:36. The Coyotes had several opportunities to pull even closer but several shots were either high or wide. The Mavericks closed out the scoring at 84:07 on an unassisted goal by Amber Dusosky.

Minnesota State outshot South Dakota 36-9 and had a 16-4 advantage in corner kicks. South Dakota goalkeeper Sara Nelson had 14 saves while Minnesota State goalkeeper Allison Vroman recorded only two saves.
