Oct. 14, 2000

Box Score

VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of South Dakota soccer team (5-10, 1-6) lost a heartbreaking, double overtime match against St. Cloud State University (6-8, 1-5) Saturday afternoon by the score of 2-1.

On a sunny Dakota Days before 122 people, the Coyotes built a 1-0 lead when sophomore Janel Johnson scored at 36:24. It looked as if the Coyotes might hold onto the lead until St. Cloud State tied the match at 72:43 on a goal by reserve Jaime Nieland off an assist by Kim Corbin. During the final 18 minutes of play, neither team could tally the go-ahead score and the match went into overtime--the Coyotes' second straight. Earlier this week (Wed., Oct. 11), the Coyotes defeated Dordt College, 3-2, in overtime. But this time, the challenge was greater as the Coyotes lost freshman goalkeeper Esther Regalado after the Huskies scored their first goal due to an injury. She had recorded five saves up to that point. Junior Sara Nelson stepped in for Regalado and did an admirable job. She stopped seven shots until the 118:37 mark, when St. Cloud State's Angie Dehart scored the winning goal off an assist from Kim Corbin.

St. Cloud State, which outshot South Dakota 18-3 in the two overtime periods, had a 34-17 overall shot advantage. Both teams recorded eight corner kicks.
