Sophomore Janel Johnson scored in overtime to give the University of South Dakota a thrilling 3-2 win over Dordt College in a non-conference soccer match Wednesday afternoon at the soccer field just north of the DakotaDome.
South Dakota (5-9, 1-5) overcame a two-goal deficit in their victory. Dordt College jumped to a quick start, receiving first period goals from Heather Broekhuis (assist by Karen Vreeman) at 24:49 and Kalie Gaskill (assist from Sarah Vriend) at 37:20 to lead at the break 2-0. The second period belonged to the Coyotes as Johnson and junior Erin Torres led the Coyotes' rally.
Johnson started the Coyotes' comeback by scoring an unassisted goal at 55:31 to pull South Dakota to within one goal. Then, 31 seconds later at 56:02, Torres scored off assists from freshman Ali Magel and Johnson. At the 96:45 mark, Johnson tallied the game-winner on action near the net to end the game.
Freshman Esther Regalado recorded nine saves in goal for South Dakota. The Coyotes out-shot Dordt, 21-15, including 13 second-period shots. Dordt had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Dordt College goalie Kristin Zomermaand had 11 saves.
