The University of South Dakota soccer team (4-8, 1-4) fell to the University of North Dakota, 2-1, in North Central Conference action on an overcast and very cold Saturday afternoon at the
soccer field just north of the DakotaDome.
The Fighting Sioux (7-4, 2-2) tallied the only first period goal when Melissa Bowers scored off an assist from Lindsay Hewitt on a breakdown in front of the Coyotes' goal at 36:33. In the
second period, both teams played solid defense and the scoring was difficult although South Dakota had several good scoring changes, including a shot that hit the crossbar. North Dakota finally broke through and added their second goal at 82:59 by Jennifer Cilz, who's shot slipped off the hands off USD goalkeeper Esther Regalado's hands. Tina Morse had the assist for the Fighting Sioux. The Coyotes answered that goal almost immediately when sophomore Janel Johnson scored unassisted off a furious charge in front of the UND goal at 84:30, but South Dakota was unable to get the equalizer in the final minutes.
North Dakota outshot South Dakota, 17-12. North Dakota also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. South Dakota's freshman goalkeeper Esther Regalado had eight saves while North Dakota's goalkeeper Eve Compton had six saves. South Dakota had six fouls and North Dakota had three in a game that featured three yellow cards.
