Led by the school-record effort of junior Erin Torres, the University of South Dakota women's soccer team raised their season record to 2-1 with a 6-1 win over Morningside College Tuesday evening at the soccer field just north of the DakotaDome.
Torres of Phoenix, Ariz. scored four goals for the Coyotes in the best individual performance to date by a Coyote women's soccer player. Also contributing goals for USD were Janel Johnson of Bellevue, Neb., who had a pair of goals and two assists.
The Coyotes, who have just begun their second season, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and outscored the Mustangs 3-1 in the second half. Torres scored in the 27th minute of the first half off an assist from sophomore Lindsey Sturm of Sioux Falls, S.D. Johnson scored off a penalty kick in the 13th minute, and Torres finished off the first half with an unassisted goal with two minutes to go.
Torres then continued her assault on the record with a goal in the 33rd minute of the second half as she was assisted by both Sturm and Johnson. Morningside scored their only goal of the match when Megan Winn scored only seconds after Torres' third goal off an assist from Janel Gillies. Torres then scored her fourth and final goal in the 27th minute off assists by sophomore Jaime Strong of McCook Lake, S.D. and Johnson. Johnson finished the scoring with her second goal with 10 minutes left.
Freshman Esther Regalado of San Pedro, Calif. allowed just one goal and had 11 saves in 90 minutes of work. Regalado was making her Coyote debut minding the net. Morningside goalie Amy Althoff allowed six goals and made four saves.
The Coyotes had 21 shots including 11 shots on goal. Morningside had 18 shots and 12 shots on goal. Each team had four corner kicks.
Next for the Coyotes is a match with National American University in Rapid City, S.D. on Sept. 9 at 5 PM.
