Soccer Team Falls In Championship Game To NSU

Team falls by a score of 2-1.

VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of South Dakota women's soccer team fell to Northern State University 2-1 on Sunday, Sept. 3 in the championship match of the NSU Tournament in Aberdeen, S.D.

USD (1-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by sophomore Janel Johnson of Bellevue, Neb. off a header from junior Erin Torres of Phoenix, Ariz. following a corner kick. Northern State answered with a goal by Ellen Anderson 10 minutes later. The Wolves took the lead for good 70 minutes into the match on a goal by Lori Hoffman.

The Coyotes had 15 shots (13 on goal) while NSU had 20 shots (12 on goal). Northern State had the advantage in corner kicks 10-2. USD goalkeeper Ashley Baldwin gave up both goals and had 10 saves.

The Coyotes and first-year head coach Jessica Maddox will open their home schedule against Morningside College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Game time is set for 5:30 PM at the soccer field just north of the DakotaDome.
