The University of South Dakota women's soccer team opened their season with a 7-3 triumph over Rocky Mountain College on Saturday, Sept. 2 during the Northern State Tournament in Aberdeen, S.D.
USD (1-0) outshot Rocky Mountain 33-12 and had a 12-2 advantage in corner shots. Erin Torres, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz., had three goals and two assists to pace the Coyotes. Ali Magel, a freshman from Sioux City, Iowa, scored two goals and an assist. Freshman Sara Dvorak of Pierre, S.D. and junior Arianne Jones of Sioux Falls, S.D. also scored goals for the Coyotes. Sophomore Janel Johnson of Bellevue, Neb., freshman Stefanie Lierz of Omaha, Neb. and sophomore Lindsey Strum of Sioux Falls all had assists for USD.
The Coyotes, who sported a 6-9-1 mark during their inaugural season last season, will play host Northern State University on Sunday for the championship of the tournament. NSU was a 3-2 winner in overtime over Augustana College on Saturday.
