The University of South Dakota women's soccer team (3-5, 1-1) jumped off to a quick 3-0 start and defeated South Dakota State, 4-1, in North Central Conference women's soccer on Sunday at Bob Shelden Field. The Coyotes snapped a four-match losing streak and broke the Jacks' three-match winning streak.
The Coyotes opened the scoring at the 6:13 mark on an unassisted goal by sophomore Lindsey Sturm. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Janel Johnson, who recorded her first two-goal game of the season, scored on a penalty kick at 14:04 and again off an assist by junior Erin Torres at 24:48 at the Coyotes opened a 3-0 lead in the first period. SDSU (4-5, 1-1) cut the margin to 3-1 on a goal by Melissa Speiser (assist by Nellie Stebbins) at the 29:35 mark of the first period. South Dakota freshman Stefanie Lierz finished the scoring with a goal at 64:47 off assists by Torres and Sturm.
SDSU outshot USD 34-29 while USD had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. USD freshman goalkeeper Esther Regalado recorded 17 saves in 90 minutes of action.
