USD’s Julia Frie Named Stan Marshall Award Recipient

6/26/2003

Julia Frie, who helped lead the USD women's basketball team to a school-record 27-5 record and No. 9 national ranking, was named a Stan Marshall Award recipient on June 26 by the North Central Conference office. She was one of three honored.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Former University of South Dakota women’s basketball player Julia Frie was one of three individuals to receive the prestigious Stan Marshall Award, according to an announcement by the North Central Conference office today. Tyler Bryant of South Dakota State and Kelby Klosterman of the University of North Dakota were the male recipients of the award, which is awarded annually to a male and female senior student-athlete in the North Central Conference that distinguish themselves in academic performance, athletic ability and community activities.

Frie, who earned her undergraduate degree this spring, becomes the third USD female athlete to receive the Marshall honor. Karrie Wallen (1984) and Jean Misterek (1987) also were honorees. She is the second USD athlete in three years to receive the honor. USD’s Jeremy Kudera (men’s basketball), now enrolled in the USD School of Medicine, was a 2001 Marshall Award recipient.

The award is named in memory of longtime SDSU athletic director Stan Marshall, who passed away in 1980. Marshall was a leader at the conference and national levels of intercollegiate athletics. The recipients of the Stan Marshall Award are selected by the league’s institutional representatives from the NCC Honor Athletes that were announced earlier this month. Each school selects one male and one female student-athlete for the Honor Athlete recognition.

Frie, originally of Byron, Minn., and a senior with a 4.0 GPA in biology/chemistry, helped lead the USD women’s basketball team to school-record 27-5 mark and a berth in the national playoffs. Her leadership helped USD advance to the North Central Regional finals and earn a final ranking of No. 9 in the NCAA Division II poll. For the third straight season, she was named to the Academic All-NCC team. In addition, she was named to the Verizon Academic All-American Second-Team; while also garnering Verizon Academic District VII First-Team honors. Named First Team All-NCC, she averaged 10.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, while converting 48-of-124 three-point field goals for 38.7 percent. She was selected to the North Central Region All-Tournament Team. She finished her career eighth on USD’s career steal list (268) and 11th ( 595) on the all-time rebound chart. Her 1,302 points placed her seventh on South Dakota’s all-time scoring list. She was third in three-point field goals with 150. Frie is just the eighth USD player ever to reach the 1,000-point, 500-rebound club. In her career, she had 70 double-figure scoring games, including 17 this past season. She is the daughter of Bob & Chris Frie.

Other female Honor Athletes considered for the award were Missy Borell (South Dakota State, basketball), Kate Cahill (North Dakota, volleyball), Jewlia Grennan (Nebraska-Omaha, volleyball), Karly Klein (Minnesota State, swimming), Melissa Pater (South Dakota State, basketball), Charissa Sheppard (Augustana, basketball), Colleen Tuckner (North Dakota State, volleyball), Tesia Zuba (St. Cloud State, swimming).
