Several Coyotes Take Home First As Indoor Track & Field Season Opens

VERMILLION, S.D. - Several University of South Dakota indoor track and field athletes turned in stellar performances as USD opened their season with the USD Preseason Open Thursday night in the DakotaDome.

The men's team received a strong performance from Paul Brozik of Winner, S.D., who had a personal-best of 7'0" in winning the long jump. Tom Green took the 55-meter dash in 6.34 seconds, and James Jeffrey was first in the 500-meter dash in 1:07.49. John Kehoe won the 800-meter run in 1:54.13. Ryan Finley won the 400-meter dash in 49.04 seconds and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay that had a time of 3:23.75.

Sara Deckert led the women's team by winning the 400-meter dash in 57.10 seconds and anchored the Coyotes' winning 4x400-meter relay team that had a time of 4:02.49. Tonya Kneifl won the 55-meter low hurdles in 8.54 seconds and the high jump at 5'6". Tammy Christensen took the 800-meter run in 2:21.01 while Molly Wedel won the 5,000-meter run in 17:03.77.

Wedel's performance set a new school and DakotaDome record. She broke her own record of 17:12.66 set in 1999. Her time automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships to be held at Boston in March.
