Track & Field Teams Both Finish Second At NCC Championships

USD takes 12 titles; four student-athletes win two events.

FARGO, N.D. - Both The University of South Dakota men's and women's track and field team registered six individual titles but still finished second at the North Central Conference Championships in Fargo, N.D., on Friday and Saturday. The USD men had 217 points but finished behind North Dakota State with 241.5. The South Dakota women had 122 points, which was second to NDSU, which had 209 points. Between the two squads, the Coyotes had four double winners - Andrew Neugebauer, Sara Deckert, Tonya Kneifl and Molly Wedel.

For the men, Andrew Neugebauer (Dimock, S.D.) was a double winner in the 800-meter run (1:50.31) and 1,500-meter run (3:56.07). Ronnie McDougle (Pompano, Fla.) captured the 200-meter dash title (21.07) and was third in the 100-meter dash (10.82). Josh Hofer (Freeman, S.D.) won the 110-meter hurdles (14.50) and was third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (54.25). Bill Gassen (Rapid City, S.D.) won the shot put with a throw of 54'4.5". Derek Pelc (Norfolk, Neb.) grabbed a second place in the high jump (6'6") while Jason Probasco (Woodbine, Iowa) had a track record in winning the 10,000-meter run 30:23.39 (broke record of 30:30.10 held by Jesse Westrup, NDSU, 1997) on Friday. Noah Deyo (Rapid City, S.D.) was second (30:38.90) in the 10,000-meter run. The South Dakota men's team also finished second in the 4x100 relay (41.54) and 4x400-meter relay (3:17.07).

Three double winners - Molly Wedel, Sara Deckert and Tonya Kneifl, led the South Dakota women. Wedel (Spencer, Iowa) broke the track record (Heidi Reed, Augustana, 1997, 36:24.50) with her time of 35:58.28 on Friday. She came back on Saturday to win the 5,000-meter run in 17:36.17. Deckert (Doland, S.D.) won both the 100-meter (11.83) and the 200-meter dash (23.64). Kneifl (Newcastle, Neb.), who tied the track record on Friday in the high jump by going 5'8.5" (Kim Schiemenz, Northern Colorado, 1998), won the javelin throw (139'2") on Saturday. Kneifl also finished third in the long jump at 19'2.25" and was sixth in the 100-meter low hurdles (14.82). Tammy Christensen (Freeman, S.D.) finished second in the 800-meter run (2.12.86). The South Dakota women's team was second in the 4x100-meter relay (47.47).
