The University of South Dakota men's and women's teams both lead after day one of competition at the North Central Conference Track and Field Championships in Fargo, N.D. The Coyotes were led by three first-place finishes. The South Dakota men have 55 points, leading North Dakota State with 46 and Northern Colorado 34. The Coyote women have 48 points after day one. They are ahead of NDSU, 40, and South Dakota State, 31.

The USD women received first place showings by Molly Wedel (Spencer, Iowa) in the 10,000-meter run and Tonya Kneifl (Newcastle, Neb.) in the high jump. Wedel broke the track record (Heidi Reed, Augustana, 1997, 36:24.50) with her time of 35:58.28. Jen Feely (Fairmont, Minn.) finished fifth in 38:46.68 with Aimee Dunlop (Woodbine, Iowa), seventh, 39:10.02.
Kneifl won the high jump by tying the track record of 5'8.5" held by Kim Schiemenz of Northern Colorado in 1998. She also finished third in the long jump at 19'2.25". Sandy Pelkofer was second in the pole vault at 11'7.
On the men's side, Jason Probasco led a host of Coyote runners in the 10,000-meter run. The senior from Woodbine, Iowa, finished first with a time of 30:23.39 while Noah Deyo (Rapid City) was second at 30:38.90, Adam Lindahl (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was fifth in 31:37.87 and Ed Whetham (Stillwater, Minn.) finished eighth in 32:51.15. Greg Bennett finished fourth in the pole vault, going 14'4. In the long jump, Chris Slatt (Fairmont, W.V.) was second in 24'6", and Paul Brozik (Winner, S.D.), fourth, 23'2.25".
