Track & Field's Tonya Kneifl Breaks High Jump School Record At Sioux City Relays

Coach Dave Gottsleben inducted into Sioux City Relays Hall of Fame.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Highlighted by the record-breaking performance of Tonya Kneifl, The University of South Dakota brought home 11 first-place titles at the Sioux City Relays held on Friday and Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa. South Dakota Track and Field Coach Dave Gottsleben was inducted into the Sioux City Relays Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon.

Kneifl (Newcastle, Neb.) broke her own record in the high jump as she went 5'9.25. Kneifl, who was second in the long jump (18'06), had previously gone 5'8.75 outdoors in the high jump. Molly Wedel won two races, the 1,500 meters in 4:43.05 and the 5,000-meter run in a Sioux City Relays record of 17:19.50. Wedel (Spencer, Iowa) broke the meet record of 17:31.64 set by Stacy Johnson of Augustana in 1997. Patricia Goertz (Cheyenne, Wyo.) won the 800-meter run in 2:17.68 while Sandy Pelkofer (Rapid City, S.D.) took first in the pole vault in 12'00, which also established a new Sioux City Relays mark. Mandi Muller (Schuyler, Neb.) took first in the discus (150'07), second in the hammer throw (166'10) and third in the shot put (42'02.50). Standout sprinter Sara Deckert (Doland, S.D.) took first in the 100-meter dash (11.96) and second in the 400-meter dash (55.77).

For the men's team, Josh Hofer (Freeman, S.D.) finished 1st in the 110-meter hurdles (14.80), Bill Gassen (Rapid City, S.D.) took first in the shot put (54'02) while USD won the 4x100 relay (42.62) and the 4x200-meter relay (1:28.93). The men took six second place finishes including Ronnie McDougle (Pompano, Fla.) who was runner-up in the 100-meter dash (11:06). Other second place finishers included Wayne Reynolds (Omaha, Neb.), 400-IM hurdles (53.97), Chad Rohde (Watertown, S.D.), triple jump (46'08.75), Dean Gillen (Blackhawk, S.D.), hammer throw (168'07), and Chad Bell (Alexandria, S.D.), javelin throw (164.05).

Former Coyote Matt Hoyt won the 5,000-meter run in a meet record of 14:23.61 (James McGowan, Wayne State, 14:58.02). In addition, Coyote pole vault coach Derek Miles, competing for Bell Athletics, went 18'9 in the pole vault to establish a meet record. For complete results go to www.screlays.com
