Indoor Track & Field Captures 10 Titles At John Dalton Memorial Invitational

Men take four titles, women take six in preparation for NCC championships.

VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of South Dakota men's and women's track and field squads took a total of 10 titles at the John Dalton Memorial Meet held on Saturday, February 17 at the DakotaDome.

Tonya Kneifl (Newcastle, Neb.) won three events to lead the Coyotes' women. Kneifl took first place in the 55-meter low hurdles (8.33), high jump (5'08), and the long jump (19'00.50). Tammy Christensen (Freeman, S.D.) won the 800-meter run (2:15.51) while Mandi Muller (Schuyler, Neb.) captured titles in both the shot put (44'06) and weight throw (51'10.50). Sara Menghini (Omaha, Neb.) was second in the 55-meter dash (7.31) and the 200-meter dash (25.61).

For the South Dakota men's team, Paul Brozik (Winner, S.D.) won the long jump (23'06.75) while teammate Chad Rohde (Watertown, S.D.) was second (23'00.75). Rohde also second in the triple jump (48'03.25). Bill Gassen (Rapid City, S.D.) won the shot put (52'03.25) while Dean Gillen (Black Hawk, S.D.) captured the weight throw title (55'04.75) and South Dakota won the 4X400 meter relay (3:19.75). Pat Belling (Omaha, Neb.) finished second in the 200-meter dash (22.47) while Ryan Finley (Omaha, Neb.) was second in the 400-meter dash (48.93). James Jeffery (Sturgis, S.D.) finished second in the 500-meter dash (1:05.53). Noah Deyo (Rapid City, S.D.) finished second in the one mile run (4:21.71). Also finishing second for South Dakota was Derek Pelc (Norfolk, Neb.) in the high jump (6'6) and Vinnie Olson (Pierre, S.D), shot put (49'01).

Sharlene Maxwell of Briar Cliff won two events including the 55-meters (7.26) and the 200 meter dash (25.24).

During the event, South Dakota honored the family of the late John Dalton.
