Miles Advances to Pole Vault Finals at IAAF World Outdoor Championships

BERLIN, Germany -- Derek Miles, an assistant track and field coach at The University of South Dakota, has advanced to the finals in the pole vault of the IAAF World Outdoor Championships being held in Berlin, Germany.

Miles, a 1996 USD graduate, recorded an effort of 5.55 meters to reach the finals, which are set for Aug. 22 in Berlin. Steve Hooker of Australia was the leader in the qualifying round at 5.65m.

Miles is the lone American to qualify for the finals.

Miles is a two-time U.S. Olympian in the pole vault. He finished fourth in the pole vault at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.
