Head Women's Track and Field Coach

Lucky Huber is in his 16th year as the women’s track and field coach at South Dakota. He has directed the Coyotes to 14 conference championships (eight indoor, six outdoor).
Huber helped build a USD program that excelled at the NCAA Division II and North Central Conference level, and continued that sucess when the Coyotes became Division I and Great West Conference members during the 2008-09 season. He guided the women's program to a conference title at the indoor meet, and a second-place finish outdoors. He was named the 2009 Great West Indoor Coach of the Year.
In spring 2008, Huber was named the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches National Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year. It was the second time in his career that Huber received national coach of the year honors as he was also recognized in 2004. Huber was also the USTFCCA/s North Central Region Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year four times between 2003 and 2008.
Huber directed the USD women’s track and field team to its fifth straight NCC Outdoor Championship in 2008. His team set an NCC record by totaling 255 points. The NCC title was Huber’s 13th (seven indoor, sixth outdoor) of his career.
In his 18th overall season, he was named both the women’s indoor and outdoor NCC Coach of the Year in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005 and 2007. He was the NCC Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year in 2005. He also was selected the North Central Region Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998, 2006 and 2007.
In 1998, Huber directed the Coyotes to second-place team finish at the NCAA Indoor Nationals, which is the highest finish by a USD indoor or outdoor squad in track and field history. Also in 1998, he coached his team to a fifth-place team finish at the NCAA Outdoor Nationals. In 2008, he coached the Coyotes to sixth place finishes at both the NCAA Division II Indoor Championship and the NCAA Division II Outdoor meet.
In total, he has led USD to 18 top-10 finishes at either national indoor or outdoor meets. The top-10 finishes at the indoor nationals included 1994, 10th; 1998, 2nd; 1999, 6th; 2001, 7th; 2003, 9th; 2004, 7th; 2006, 10th; 2008, 6th. His top-10 squads outdoors include 1990, 8th; 1992, 10th; 1994, 7th; 1998, 5th; 1999, 7th; 2000, 6th; 2001, 6th; 2003, 7th; 2004, 10th; and 2008, 6th.
Huber, who worked with the USD Academic Advising Center for 17 years, received both his Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education (1990) and Master of Arts degree in education (1992) from USD.
A native of Elk Point, S.D., Huber lettered three years for the Coyote track and field team, while competing in the pole vault and decathlon (1986-90).
Since becoming the Head Women’s coach at USD in 1994, he has coached 187 track and field All-Americans. In addition, he has coached 10 national champions (Nancy Overman, discus; Elena Swan, long jump, triple jump; Sarah Deckert, 400-meter run; and Sandy Pelkofer, pole vault; Brianne Edwards, heptathlon; Emma Erickson, 800 meter run (indoors and outdoors); along with Sam Pribyl, (men’s pole vault) and Steve Gordon (men’s triple jump) and two time Olympic polevaulter Derek Miles.
He has worked extensively over the years with USD’s jumpers, including American pole vaulter Derek Miles, who is a two-time Olympian. Miles won the 2008 Olympic Trials and took fourth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also was the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Champion.
Huber is married to the former Stacy Kracht of Mitchell, S.D. They have two daughters, Mackenzie and Josie. Kracht is a member of the Coyotes Sports Hall of Fame and formerly a four-year starter on the USD women’s basketball team (1987-91).
