BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota swimming and diving teams lost a pair of duals Saturday at South Dakota State. The Coyote women and men each fell to SDSU and St. Louis in dual-meet action.
St. Louis beat the Coyote women, 145-96 while SDSU topped the Coyote women, 161-80. The USD men lost to St. Louis, 162-77 and to SDSU, 135-100. It was the Coyotes’ first competition in more than a month.
For the Coyote women, Elizabeth Hoffman (So, Eureka, S.D.) continued her outstanding season with three more wins. She won the 500 freestyle at 5:13.72, winning the event by nearly six seconds. She added wins in the 200 freestyle at 1:55.83 and and the 100 freestyle at 54.25.
Raynee Buckley (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) was third in the 1,000 freestyle at 11:17.09.
The USD women’s 400 medley relay was third, consisting of Emily Connelly (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.), Shannon Moceri (So., South Lyon, Mich.) Meredith Howell (Sr., Lenexa, Kan.) and Kaitlyn Jefferson (Fr., Westland, Mich.). That group finished with a time of 4:14.24.
Jefferson was third in the 50 freestyle at 25.32, while Sallie Collins (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) was fourth in the 200 IM at 2:15.48. Collins added a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly at 2:18.84.
Hannah Roetzel (So., Jr., Newcastle, Wyo.) was fourth in the 3-meter diving at 226.35, while Jessica Jackson (Fr., Waukesha, Wis.) was fifth in the 1-meter diving at 215.17.
Moceri was fourth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:36.32.
For the Coyote men, Thad Stoddard (So., Douglas, Wyo.) captured the victory in the 200 freestyle at 1:45.61, with John Dolan (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) placing fifth in that race at 1:51.49. Stoddard was second in the 100 free at 48.24.
Ty Clikeman (Sr., Gillette, Wyo.) had a strong showing in the 50 freestyle, taking second at 22.42. Drew Guinan (Fr., Blair, Neb.) was fifth in that race at 22.80. Ray Wieser (Jr., Vacaville, Calif.) was second in the 200 IMN at 2:01.18, with Terry Rolfe (So., Newcastle, Wyo.) taking third at 2:02.33. Wieser also added a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke at 2:17.04.
The USD men’s 400 medley relay was third, consisting of Rolfe, Wieser, Jody Lutz (Sr., Ardmore, Okla.) and Taylor Adams (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.). That group finished with a time of 3:40.74.
Matt Weyer (So., Taos, N.M.) was fourth in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:22.68, with teammate Nick Challgren (Fr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) fifth at 10:28.85. Chris Hause (So., Overland Park, Kan.) placed third in the 3-meter diving at 248.03 and was fourth in the 1-meter diving with a score of 236.77.
Rolfe placed third in the 200 backstroke (2:00.76) with Gabe Sands (So., Greeley, Colo.) placing fourth at 2:01.57.
USD returns to action on Jan. 23. The USD men will compete at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, while the USD women will face Northern Iowa and Kansas in a meet in Lawrence, Kan. Both meets are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
