VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota men’s swimming and diving team recorded an impressive 186-108 win over in-state rival South Dakota State in action Thursday night at the DakotaDome pool in Vermillion, S.D.
SDSU topped the Coyote women, 169-131 in the dual between the two teams.
Both Coyote teams had several strong performances, as the USD men won 13 events, while the USD women captured five wins. Winning three events for the USD men was Terry Rolfe (So., Newcastle, Wyo.), while Thad Stoddard (So., Douglas, Wyo.) and Chris Hause (So., Overland Park, Kan.) won two each.Elizabeth Hoffman (So., Eureka, S.D.) won three events for the Coyote women.
For the USD men, Rolfe won the 100 freestyle at 52.79, setting a new USD meter record, with Dane Van Arkel (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) taking second at 54.42. Lukas Dunn (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) was third at 54.75. Rolfe won the 400 IM at 4:42.03, shattering the USD pool and meter record by more than four seconds. Rolfe set another USD pool and meter record in the 200 freestyle, winning that event at 1:55.70.
Stoddard won the 100 backstroke at 57.15, setting a new USD pool and meter record. Gabe Sands (So., Greeley, Colo.) was second at 1:03.02. Stoddard added a win in the 200 backstroke at 2:09.90, setting a new USD meter record.
Hause was victorious in the 1-meter diving with a score of 222.9 and also won the 3-meter diving at 258.53.
Bridger Miller (Jr., Upton, Wyo.) won the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.82 and was second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:30.66. Nick Challgren (Fr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) won the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:57.45, with Matt Weyer (So., Taos, N.M.) taking third at 9:01.23.
Van Arkel edged Stoddard in a thrilling finish to win the 50 freestyle. Van Arkel won with a time of 24.60, with Stoddard second at 24.76 and Ty Clikeman (Sr., Gillette, Wyo.) third at 25.09.
Cody Horton (Fr., Mitchell, S.D.) won the 400 freestyle at 4:21.60, with Weyer third at 4:22.52.
Andy Calahan (Jr., Winterset, Iowa) was third in the 200 butterfly at 2:23.60, while Sinjin Wilkerson (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) was third in the 200 breaststroke at 2:41.04.
USD’s 200 medley relay won with a time of 1:48.24. That consisted of Rolfe, Miller, Clikeman and Van Arkel. In addition, the Coyotes’ 200 freestyle relay, consisting of Stoddard, Clikeman, Miller and Van Arkel, was victorious at 1:37.60.
In the 100 butterfly, Clikeman was second at 1:01.12, while Jody Lutz (Sr., Ardmore, Okla.) was third at 1:01.28.
Hoffman continued to dominate for the Coyote women. She won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:08.72, setting a new USD meter record. Kaitlyn Jefferson (Fr., Westland, Mich.) was third at 2:14.05. Hoffman added a second win later in the 100 freestyle at 59.22, setting a new USD meter record and just missing the USD pool record. Hoffman also posted a win in the 400 freestyle at 4:34.97.
Janine James (So., Cheyenne, Wyo.) won the 3-meter diving at 239.55, with Jessica Jackson (Fr., Waukesha, Wis.) taking second at 230.47.
USD’s 200 freestyle relay won with a time of 1:52. That consisted of Hoffman, Jefferson, Rita Buschbacher (Jr., Brighton, Mich.) and Emily Connelly (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.).
Jefferson was second in the 50 freestyle at 27.86, with Buschbacher taking third at 28.33.
Sallie Collins (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) was second in the 200 butterfly at 2:30.77, with Meredith Howell (Sr., Lenexa, Kan.) taking third at 2:34.03. Connelly was second in the 200 backstroke at 2:31.94, while Collins was second in the 100 butterfly at 1:09.13. Howell was third at 1:10.16. Collins was second in the 400 IM at 5:19.45.
Connelly was third in the 100 backstroke at 1:10.37, while Shannon Moceri (So., South Lyon, Mich.) was third in the 100 breaststroke at 1:16.02. Moceri was third in the 200 breaststroke as well at 2:36.48.
James was third in the 1-meter diving at 224.77.
The USD teams are off until after the first of the year when they compete against Washington College (Md.) on Jan. 9 in Key Largo, Fla.
