Softball Team Cruises For 9-0 Win Over Minnesota-Crookston

VERMILLION, S.D. - Freshman Sara Medved (Shoreview, Minn.) limited Minnesota-Crookston to four hits in five innings and recorded four strikeouts as she registered her second win (2-4) of the season. In the 9-0 victory, senior All-American catcher Tiffany Davis had a home run and a double plus two RBI to lead the Coyotes' offensive charge. Leanna Chapman (Rapid City, S.D.), who is hitting .467 on the season, had a pair of hits, a run scored and RBI while Julie MacRunnels (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had two hits, including a triple, with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Tiffany Hopkins (Cannon Falls, Minn.) also had two hits, a run scored and RBI. Senior shortshop Melanie Robotham (Seward, Neb.) had a triple and a RBI while freshman Mollie Witherbee (Omaha, Neb.) added a double.

In the decisive second inning, the Coyotes erupted for seven runs, keyed by Davis' home run. Senior Jessica Bills (Sioux Falls, S.D.) singled to open the inning and was sacrificed to second. Robotham tripled through the left side, scoring Bills. Hopkins singled to left center and advanced to second on an error by the centerfielder, which allowed Robotham to score. After a ground out, Chapman singled up the middle, which scored Hopkins. Medved singled to advance Chapman, and MacRunnels tripled to left center, scoring both Medved and Chapman. Then, Davis hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to cap the seven-run second inning.

The Coyotes scored two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. After Medved grounded out to open the inning, MacRunnels singled and Davis moved her to third with her second hit, a double to center field. Bills reached on a fielder's choice, scoring MacRunnels. Freshman Kaja Martinson singled through the left side, scoring Davis.
