Softball's Hill Shuts Down Winona State 4-2 In DakotaDome Classic

Sophomore pitcher limits Warriors to four hits over six innings.

VERMILLION, S.D. - Tiffany Hill (2-4) picked up her second win of the season by shutting down Winona State (7-5-1) in a 4-2 South Dakota win at the DakotaDome Classic on Saturday. Hill (Sioux Falls, S.D.) allowed no runs and just four hits in six innings.

South Dakota scored two runs in both the first and fourth innings. Leanna Chapman opened the first inning with a single and Sara Medved reached on a fielder's choice. Julie MacRunnels successfully sacrificed Chapman to third and Medved to second before Tiffany Davis reached on a walk. After an infield out, Keri Bolte had two RBI on a single up the middle as the Coyotes grabbed a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, sophomore Jen Hedegaard (Underwood, Iowa) reached on a walk and freshman Mollie Witherbee (Omaha, Neb.) singled through the left side before Mertens sacrificed and both runners advanced a base. Then Chapman ripped a single up the middle to score two runners and give the Coyotes a 4-0 lead.

Winona State scored twice in the seventh inning off relief picther Janice Alswager. Kari Webers opened the inning with a double and scored on a double by Jean Ryan who advanced to third on a ground out. Ryan scored on a throwing error by Bolte before Alswager closed the door by forcing Megs Kotlarz to ground out to shortstop.

The Coyotes had four runs on seven hits and one error while Winona State had two runs on six hits and no errors. Chapman had two hits, two RBI and a score scored while Bolte had one hit and two RBI. Witherbee had two hits and a run scored.
