The University of South Dakota Coyotes women's softball team dropped a pair of games to Winona State, 5-1 and 5-4, in nonconference softball on Friday night at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes fell to 2-2 at home and 5-9 overall this season. Winona State improved to 7-4-1 on the season.
Winona State 5 South Dakota 1
In game one, Winona State's Cyndy Schubbe limited South Dakota to one run and four hits as the Warriors took a 5-1 decision. The Warriors struck for four runs in the top of the third to grab a 5-0 lead and the Coyotes never recovered. Senior All-American catcher Tiffany Davis
(Hawarden, Iowa) hit her third home run of the season to break up Schubbe's attempt of a shutout. Freshman Sara Medved (Shoreview, Minn.) started and took the loss for the Coyotes. Medved, who fell to 1-3 on the season, allowed seven hits and five runs in two innings of work. Sophomore Janice Alswager (Columbus, Neb.) entered the game in the third and shutdown the
Warriors. Alswager allowed seven hits and no runs in five innings. The Warriors had five runs on 14 hits and the Coyotes had one run and four hits.
Winona State 5 South Dakota 4
Winona State overcame a 4-0 deficit by rallying for five runs in the sixth inning as the Warriors took a 5-4 decision over South Dakota in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday. Jenny Fabian was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits and one run in four innings of work. She entered the game in the fourth inning after Schubbe had allowed six hits and three runs in three innings. Sophomore Tiffany Hill (Sioux Falls, S.D.) took the loss, allowing nine hits and five runs (two earned) in five and two-third innings. Hill is 1-4 on the season. Alswager entered the game in the sixth inning and allowed just one hit in one and one-third innings of relief work.
Offensively for South Dakota, Leanna Chapman (Rapid City, S.D.) had two hits and scored a run while Jessica Bills also had two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Davis had a single and run scored while freshman Keri Bolte (Ralston, Neb.) had a single and RBI. Julie MacRunnels (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had a double. The Coyotes had four runs on eight hits while Winona State had five runs on 10 hits.
