Jill Smolczyk Leads Four Coyotes On NCC All-Academic Women's At-Large Team

South Dakota's Jill Smolczyk, a junior from Omaha, Neb., was a repeat selection on the 2007 All-North Central Conference Academic At-Large Team that was announced on Thursday by the league office.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Four South Dakota women's student-athletes, including repeat selection Jill Smolczyk, were named to the 2006-07 Academic All-North Central Conference Women's At-Large Team, according to an announcement on Thursday by the league office. The 12-member team was determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
Smolczyk, a junior All-American diver from Omaha, Neb., was named for the second straight season. Other Coyotes named to the at-large squad included Emilie Kluth, a junior All-American from Columbus, Neb.; Amanda Barton, a sophomore women's tennis student-athlete from Aberdeen, S.D.; and Amanda Young, a junior golfer from Mitchell, S.D.
At the 2007 Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, Smolcyzk earned two All-American honors. She finished third in both 3M diving and 1M diving at the DII nationals which gives her four career All-American honors. Smolczyk, who owns a 3.838 grade point average in psychology, also won both the 1M and 3M diving titles at the NCC meet this winter.
Kluth earned her first All-American honor with a fifth-place finish in 3M diving at the NCAA DII nationals. She earned honorable mention All-American honors in 1M diving. Kluth, who has a 3.788 GPA in English, also received a SAAC Coyote Character Award and the SAAC's Unsung Hero Award at the recent USD Howling Pack Student-Athletes Awards Banquet.
Barton, who owns a 3.925 grade point average in elementary and special education, teamed with Rachel Kludt of Huron, S.D., to finish fourth at the NCC Tennis Championships and a 10-9 overall record. Barton had an 11-11 record at #3 singles for the Coyotes. Last August, Barton was named to the International Tennis Association’s All-Academic Squad. Also in the fall of 2006, Barton and Kludt were ranked eighth in the region, becoming USD’s first-ever doubles squad to earn a regional ranking by the ITA.
A senior from Mitchell, S.D., Young is South Dakota’s top player on its women’s golf squad. A longtime volunteer for youth golf; youth hockey, Young has a soft spot for elderly and volunteers once a week at the retirement home, including taking the elderly bowling. The Young was one of three individuals selected to play in the 2007 NCAA Division II North Regional as an individual participant. A 2006 All-North Central Conference Second Team selection, Young was the top USD finisher in five out of six events this spring, including earning Medalist honors at the Upper Iowa Spring Classic on April 9-10. She recorded a stroke average of 81.7 this spring, which is slightly better than her 81.9 average from this fall. Earlier this school year, Young was named to the NCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. Young has a 3.6 grade point average in business.
