Men's Basketball Team Defeats Mount Marty 87-54 Tuesday Night

Paul Marshall and Jimmie Foster each score 21 points to lead the Coyotes (3-0) to victory.

VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team (3-0) continued its winning ways with a 87-54 win over Mount Marty (1-3) in non-conference action in the DakotaDome Tuesday night.

The Coyotes, who won their home opener, jumped to a 10-3 lead on a pair of three-pointers by junior Paul Marshall, who tied for a team-high 21 points. The Coyotes moved ahead 17-7 at the 13:19 mark of the first half on a pair of free throws by junior Jimmie Foster, who also had 21 points. A field goal by Mount Marty's Bryce Boyd cut the lead to 23-18 with 8:10 to play in the first half, but that is as close as the Lancers would get. A three-pointer by Foster upped the Coyote advantage to 28-20 at the 6:48 mark and a lay-up by junior Eric Hickenbottom gave the Coyotes a 10-point lead with 4:56 to play in the opening half. Foster converted a three-point play in the closing seconds on a lay-up and free throw as the Coyotes led 43-31 at the break.

The Coyotes opened the second half with a 10-0 run to increase its advantage to 53-31 at the 18:03 mark of the second half, and USD was on its way to the victory. Marshall scored eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, during that run. A dunk by junior Scott Hansen gave the Coyotes a 61-39 lead with 14:58 to play. USD increased the lead to 70-43 with 6:38 to play when senior Jeremy Kudera nailed a three-pointer. The lead grew to 81-51 on a lay-up by freshman Richard Ross, which was followed by a three-pointer by Hansen with 1:06 to play for a 84-51 lead. Mount Marty's Corey Heien hit a three-pointer, which was answered by a Ross three-pointer as the game ended.

USD hit 32-of-64 shots for 50 percent, converted 11-of-27 three-pointers (.407) and hit 12-of-23 free throws (.522). Hansen had 19 points as he hit double figures for the second straight game. Kudera had five points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Coyotes, who held a 45-30 rebound advantage. The Coyotes had an 18-9 edge in offensive rebounds. Senior guard Nate Tibbetts had 12 assists and three steals.

Mount Marty was led in scoring by David Gall, who had 11 points and eight rebounds. The Lancers hit 18-of-45 field goals for 40 percent and were just 2-of-13 from the three-point arc for 15 percent. They made 16-of-28 free throws for 57 percent.
