Thomas Sets Trey Record as USD Overwhelms MLC, 104-71

    Vermillion, S.D. – Freshman Jake Thomas set a new single-game three-point record to lead The University of South Dakota men’s basketball team to a dominating 104-71 win over Midland Lutheran in nonconference action Sunday in Vermillion, S.D.

    Thomas (Fr., Racine, Wis.) hit nine three-pointers against the Warriors, breaking the previous record of eight, which was held by several players. He finished with a career-high 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including 9-of-12 from three-point range. Louie Krogman (So., White River, S.D.) added 18 points, while Mitchell Bouie (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) added 15 points. Dustin Tetzlaff (Fr., Watertown, S.D.) added a career and team-high 10 rebounds for USD. Five Coyotes finished in double figures in all.

    Thomas started out on fire from three-point range, connecting on his first four 3-point attempts as USD opened the game on a 16-4 run in the first 3:20. Midland Lutheran sliced into the lead, closing the gap to 26-21, but USD responded with a quick 8-2 spurt, which included threes by Krogman and Thomas and a layup by Bouie, to push the lead back to 34-23 with 9:26 left in the half.

    Thomas had 22 points in the first half alone, hitting 8-of-10 field goals, including 6-for-8 from three-point range. Krogman and Bouie had eight points each, while Tyler Cain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) had seven points and seven rebounds. USD shot 50 percent (18-of-36) in the first half, including 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range.

    USD pushed its lead past 20 (54-32) for the first time in the second half with Krogman drained a three-pointer at the 18:58 mark. The Coyotes’ expanded the lead further as a layup by Conrad Krutwig (Fr., Algonquin, Ill.) gave them a 72-42 lead. USD led by as many as 37 in the second half.

    Cain finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists for USD, while Krutwig just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Roman Gentry (Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) had six points and seven rebounds. USD finished the game shooting 54.1 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three-point range.

    The Coyotes’ next action is set for Wednesday night at home against Dakota State. Game time is 7 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
