Vermillion, S.D. – Senior Tyler Cain paced a balanced attack with 18 points to lead The University of South Dakota to a 100-65 rout of Dana College on Saturday afternoon in Vermillion, S.D. Cain eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier for his career in the win, becoming just the 39th USD player to reach the milestone. Cain entered the game 11 points shy of the mark.
The Coyotes (3-3) had several contributors offensively in the win, as all 10 players that saw time scored, with five reaching double figures. Louie Krogman (So., White River, S.D.) had his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Thomas (Fr., Racine, Wis.) added 17 points, hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts, while Mitchell Bouie (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) added 14 points. Roman Gentry (Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) added 13 points. The Coyotes shot 58.5 percent (38-of-65) from the field, including 9-of-19 from three-point range, while holding the Vikings to 39 percent (28-of-71) from the field.
USD started strong from the field, hitting six of its first eight shots (75 percent), on its way to a 15-10 lead. The Coyotes opened the game 3-for-3 from three-point range, with Krogman, Thomas and Gentry draining shots from behind the arc. USD maintained a three to five-point lead for much of the first 12 minutes of the half, although Dana battled back to tie the game at 27-27 on a layup by Tristan Washington with 7:22 left in the half.
The Coyotes regained the momentum, however, going on a 15-2 run to build a 42-29 advantage with 3:23 left in the opening half. That surge was keyed by excellent play by Bouie, who had four points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds during that run. That stretch helped USD take a 46-33 lead into halftime.
USD shot the ball well in the opening half, connecting on 56.7 percent of its field goals (17-of-30). Cain led USD with 12 points, while Bouie had nine and Krogman seven. Thomas also had solid play in the first half with six points and a team-high five rebounds, while Steve Smith (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) had two blocks.
Cain opened the second half with a dunk to give USD its biggest lead up to that point, 48-33. USD pushed the lead to 59-39 – its largest of the game – when Thomas drained a three, his third of the contest. After a media timeout, Cain recorded a dunk off of an assist from Kendall Cutler (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) to build the lead to 61-39 with 15:31 left.
USD broke the game wide open about six minutes into the second half, going on a 10-0 spurt to build a 71-42 lead with 13:56 left. Jake Thomas hit a pair of long-range threes from the top of the key in that spurt, while Krogman and Cain added baskets. A Smith layup pushed the lead past 30 at 78-47 with 10:25 left, and from there, the Coyotes rolled in wrapping up their third victory of 2009-10.
Thomas and Cain had seven rebounds each, while Cutler had a team-high five assists. Jordan Boots (RFr., Vermillion, S.D.) had six points, three assists and a team-high three steals.
The Coyotes resume action on Sunday at home against Midland Lutheran. Game time is 3 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
