Lubbock, Texas -- Calvin Haynes and Roeland Schaftenaar had 14 points each to lead Oregon State to a 62-47 win over The University of South Dakota men’s basketball team in action Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas.
Oregon State (1-1), which competes in the Pac 10, led 32-21 at halftime.
The Coyotes (0-2) were led by Louie Krogman (So., White River, S.D.), who had 11 points. Jake Thomas (Fr., Racine, Wis.) and Steve Smith (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) added eight points each. Mitchell Bouie (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) had five rebounds, while Kendall Cutler (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) had three assists.
The Coyotes hung tough early, trailing 16-13 midway through the first half after a Cutler basket. Oregon State ended the first half by outscoring the USD 16-8 over the final 10 minutes to take a 32-21 lead into halftime.
USD shot 29.6 percent (8-of-27) in the first half, including 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from three-point range. Oregon State shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) in the first half.
Oregon State extended its lead to 47-28 seven minutes into the second half before the Coyotes fought their way back into the game. USD went on a 15-3 run, keyed by four points each from Smith and Tyler Cain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) and three by Cutler, to climb within 50-43 with 5:18 left. In fact, USD missed a pair of three-pointers which would have brought the Coyotes within four.
The Beavers pulled away late, however, to extend the lead back to double digits and record the win.
Cutler finished with seven points for USD. Cain, playing just 21 minutes because of foul trouble, had four points and four rebounds.
The Coyotes finished the game shooting 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the field, but shot just 18.5 percent (5-of-27) from three-point range. USD will wrap up play at the tournament with a contest Sunday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
