The University of South Dakota has established an endowed scholarship to honor Dwane Clodfelter and his legacy of success as a coach, administrator and teacher.

Coach Clodfelter passed away on April 23, 2006 at the age of 87. We miss him dearly.

In 1953, longtime Athletic Director Carl “Rube” Hoy hired Clodfelter as an assistant basketball and freshman football coach at USD. Named head men’s basketball coach at USD in 1954, he led the Coyotes to the national playoffs (1957) before his team became the first-ever North Central Conference team to win a national championship in any sport with the small college division basketball title in 1958. His 1958 team won its final 20 games and became the first North Central Conference team to go unbeaten (12-0) in league play for a 12-game schedule. Cloddy’s teams also set the state record for consecutive home wins of 34 from 1956-59. He coached two Coyote teams to NCC crowns, compiling an impressive 32-3 record from 1956-59 in NCC league games. Overall, Cloddy had an 89-67 (.571) record in NCC games. He ended his coaching career after the 1966-67 season due to health concerns, but returned to USD to coach golf and serve as an assistant athletic director until retiring in 1982. He has been inducted into numerous Halls of Fame including the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame, South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, NCC Honor Hall, and others.

The 2nd annual Coach Dwane Clodfelter Scholarship Pheasant Hunt was a tremendous success. With the limit of pheasants met early and the evening’s festivities, the event raised nearly $10,000 for “Cloddy’s” scholarship. The hunt on Oct. 27, 2006 was held in fields near the Jack and Nancy Theeler home in Mitchell, SD. Jack and Nancy (both graduates of USD in 1968 and 1971) have dedicated themselves to Coach Clodfelter’s scholarship efforts and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Thank you Jack and Nancy and to all who participated in this wonderful day! Click here to view photos of the 2nd annual “Cloddy” hunt.

Next years hunt is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 26, 2007. We hope you will join us for another great day and honor an extraordinary man, Coach Dwane Clodfelter.

On March 23, 2006 , a fundraising event was held in Phoenix , AZ for the Coach Dwane Clodfelter Scholarship Fund. The evening activities were enjoyed in a suite while watching the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trailblazers NBA basketball game at the U.S. Airways Center. The sponsor of the event was 1964 USD graduate and USD Athletics Hall of Fame member, Jim Dyer, originally from Willow Lake , SD. Jim and his family now reside in the Phoenix area. A big “Coyote” thank you goes out to Jim, Joy, and Mark Dyer for their hospitality and all of the supporters who attended the event. The event rose over $10,000, with all of the proceeds going toward the endowed scholarship in Coach Clodfelter’s name. Click here to view photos the Arizona event.
