USD Athletic Facilites

South Dakota Athletics has developed a 2015 Master Plan for Athletic Facilities. On June 29, 2011, South Dakota Athletics received approval from the Board of Regents to proceed with preliminary planning for a new basketball/volleyball arena, renovations to the DakotaDome and a new outdoor track/soccer complex.

From the Dome to the dugout, athletic facilities at The University of South Dakota provide players and fans with an extraordinary experience. The sports venues make The U a popular host for NCAA regional and national championships. Questions regarding use of the DakotaDome can be directed to Jeanette Hubert at (605) 677-8840.

The DakotaDome

30th Anniversary

One of the region’s most recognizable structures, the DakotaDome serves as the cornerstone of the Coyote Athletic Department and is home to five intercollegiate sports, including basketball, football, volleyball, track and field and swimming and diving.

Originally constructed in 1979, the Dome received a new $13 million steel roof in 2001. Additional upgrades followed including the installation of a customized Daktronics Sports Marketing video board, concourse and concession improvements, women’s locker room renovation and press box updates. Work continued in 2007 with the renovation of the sports medicine area, replacement of men’s locker room, reconstruction of the equipment room and replacement of the arena floor.

The DakotaDome has been the home for Coyote football since 1979. USD is 112-49 (.696) all-time at the DakotaDome, including 27-2 (.931) under current Coyote head coach Ed Meierkort. In 2004, a customized ProStar LED Video Display and Scoring System were added to enhance the experience for spectators at Coyote games. The facility seats 10,000 fans and USD has averaged 7,600 fans per game since Coach Meierkort took over in 2004. (Football Parking Map) (Football Gameday Information)

At home in the Dome, the Coyotes ranked among the Division II leaders in attendance for men’s and women’s basketball, and a newly-renovated practice area ensures the basketball teams can train, year-around, under consistent conditions in the multi-use facility.

The six-lane, 25-meter DakotaDome pool serves as home of the Coyote swimming and diving team and has been the training site for three national champions and 76 All-Americans.

A unique volleyball configuration ensures fans and players can enjoy an intimate setting for matches while avoiding a cavernous feel to the 10,000 capacity Dome.

The Coyotes fast, 200-meter indoor track has made the DakotaDome a popular five-time host for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field championships and has helped produce 18 national track and field champions and 361 All-Americans.

The Dome provides the entire USD student body with fitness and recreational opportunities and annually welcomes more than 480,000 fans and athletes - and a few Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons - through its gates.

Nygard Field

The Coyote softball team competes on the on-campus Nygard Field as part of a four-diamond softball facility. The Coyotes can move games or practice indoors to the DakotaDome when necessary.

USD Soccer Field

An on-campus, soccer-dedicated field has been the home of the Coyote women since soccer became an intercollegiate sport at The U in 1999. A new soccer facility is in the planning stages as part of the University’s long-range plans.

Cross Country Course

Cross country competes and trains on a University-owned Don Baker Cross County course adjacent to campus. The site has served as host of NCAA Regional Championships.

The Bluffs Golf Course

The U’s golf teams compete at the public Bluffs Golf Course approximately one mile from campus. The 6,684-yard, par 72 multi-level course overlooks the Missouri River Valley.

USD Tennis Courts

The USD Tennis Courts are home to the Coyote women’s tennis team. The facility, conveniently located next to the DakotaDome, features six courts along with wind screens to protect the courts from the wind. USD utilizes the facility for its outdoor practices and matches.
