Media Day

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

Coyote Football Media Day was held on Monday, Aug. 24. There was an excellent turnout of area newspaper, television and radio media on hand.

It was a good chance to get a look at the 2009 Coyotes. You can sense excitement when you hear Coach Ed Meierkort talk about the team, which has 10 starters returning on offense and five on defense.

The experienced players, combined with a very talented freshmen group, are a big reason for the excitement.

The Coyotes’ schedule is another. There are home games against Drake, Southeastern Louisiana, UC Davis and Southern Utah – four quality FCS foes. Plus, the road schedule includes rematches at Northern Iowa (which will be a fun road opener on Sept. 12), Montana State and Cal Poly. All three teams are ranked in the top 25 in AGS preseason poll and will be good measuring sticks for USD as it enters year 2 of the transition to Division I status.

Coyote Volleyball Opener

You couldn’t ask for a much better group of opponents to open the season than the USD volleyball team will see at the Wisconsin Tournament this week. That includes two 2008 NCAA tournament teams -- Duke and Ohio – plus a very solid Wisconsin program. Ohio and Duke are favored to win the MAC and ACC, respectively. All three teams return several starters. Coach Matt Houk’s team is anxious to get the season off and running. The opener is set for 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 in Madison.

Stefan Logan Update

Stefan Logan, a former Coyote running back standout from 2003-06 and the school’s all-time leading rusher, is making quite a case to be the kick returner for the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Logan averaged 39.2 yards per kick return in the Steelers’ preseason game against Washington on Aug. 22. That included an electrifying return of 60 years. The link below provides an update on Logan’s progress:

Josh Stamer Update

Former Coyote football standout Josh Stamer has battled injuries this preseason for the Tennessee Titans. Stamer missed the Titans’ game at Dallas last week. He is listed as second on the depth chart behind David Thornton at outside linebacker. The Titans concluded training camp on Wednesday.
