David Sayler,
Athletic Director

David Sayler

David Sayler is in his second season as the University of South Dakota’s Athletic Director. Sayler was named the school’s 12th athletic director on June 24, 2010.

With an emphasis on improving the overall student-athlete experience, Sayler was instrumental in several accomplishments during his first year at South Dakota. He secured the Coyote football team’s membership in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, starting with the 2012 season. The move to the MVFC will renew South Dakota’s rivalries with South Dakota State and North Dakota State.

The South Dakota Board of Regents gave approval for South Dakota to move forward with arena and facilities plans in June. A portion of the DakotaDome upgrades are in place, as new red seating was installed on the east side.

Sayler also helped South Dakota purchase a new basketball floor, which will be in use for the first time in 2011-12. He also has played a vital role in the school’s development of a new athletic logo that was officially implemented on Aug. 27, 2011.

South Dakota also signed a contract to partner with Learfield Sports in early 2011, a move that will go into effect for the 2011-12 athletic season. Learfield will handle aspects of signage and sponsorship at athletic venues, certain radio and television program and management of the Coyote Radio Network.

Coyote student-athletes also thrived in the classroom during Sayler’s first year, posting a 3.102 GPA in the Fall 2010 semester and a 3.195 GPA in the Spring 2011 semester.

Sayler is also implementing a Coyote letterwinner program for student-athletes, which will reward letterwinners with letterjackets and other items to recognize their time as South Dakota athletes.

Prior to joining the Coyotes, Sayler served as the Senior Executive Athletic Director at Rice University for four years, while also heading the department as Interim Athletic Director from October 2009 to March 2010. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the entire athletic department, directly overseeing all internal operations of the athletic department, as well as providing administrative oversight for all 16 of Rice’s sports. He also assisted with the development of a Strategic Plan for Rice Athletics and served as the administrator of that plan for the department.

Accomplishments on the field during include the football team making 2 bowl games, the baseball team making consecutive trips to the College World Series in Omaha, the women’s volleyball team making the NCAA tournament, and the women's track and cross country team winning the Conference USA Championship.
